Programs, not taxes, on the mind of Rose Tree Media residents

Programs, not taxes, on the mind of Rose Tree Media residents
More than 100 Rose Tree Media residents attended a school board meeting to hear the highlights of a 107-page report that includes input gathered during recent taxpayer forums focused on budget issues. The $98.2-million preliminary budget, featuring a $7.2-million spending increase and 3.5-percent tax hike, was approved by the school board in January. The district’s Act 1 property tax increase index for next year, as set by the state, is 2.5 percent, and an additional 1 percent would be sought through referendum exceptions under the current proposal. Maintaining current program and staffing levels without a tax hike would lead to a deficit of $9.5 million, according to district officials. The consensus of residents who attended the taxpayer forums was that several possible solutions to close the deficit should be explored, including an increase in property taxes and fees, and the reduction of the fund balance and administration at the secondary level. Conversely, parents were opposed to changes in the number of kindergarten, elementary and high school core subject teachers, middle school world languages, high school sports, clubs and theater productions and school nurses.
