Marple Newtown SD holds the line on taxes in new budget
Matching the fiscal success of two years ago, the Marple Newtown School Board voted unanimously to adopt a 2016-2017 final budget of $78.6 million which maintains the current tax rate of 18.1 mills. Based on the average assessment of about $250,000 for homes within the district, the typical tax bill will continue around $4,525. Homeowners who qualify will receive a credit on their bill through the Homestead Act. Marple Newtown had the option of raising taxes as high as its Act 1 index of 2.4 percent and applying for exceptions to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Unlike previous years, when it asked for and received retirement exceptions, the district did not make any requests this year.
